The third Saxon king of Germany. Reigned 961-983. Holy Roman Emperor. Reigned 967-983, co-emperor until 973. He married the Byzantine princess Theophano (c. 955-991), son of Otto I. After suppressing a rebellion by Archduke Henry of Bavaria, supported by King Boleslav II of Bohemia, and defeating King Lothar of France who had invaded Lorraine, he invaded Italy and attempted to extend his dominion to southern Italy, but was defeated by Arab and Islamic armies. He fled to Rome by sea, where he died.

ザクセン朝第3代のドイツ国王。在位961‐983年。神聖ローマ皇帝。在位967‐983年,973年までは共同皇帝。オットー1世の息子でビザンティン王女テオファノTheophanō(955ころ‐991)を妃とした。ボヘミア王ボレスラフ2世に支持されたバイエルン大公ハインリヒの反乱を鎮圧,ボレスラフに臣従を誓わせ,ロートリンゲンに侵入したフランス王ロタールを撃退したのち,イタリア遠征をおこない,南イタリアにまで支配権を拡大しようと企てたが,アラブ・イスラム軍に敗れ,海路ローマに逃れ,そこで没した。
