Russian general. Born into a military family in Pskov Oblast, he graduated from the Army College (1874). He served as Minister of War from 1898 to 1904, and when the Russo-Japanese War began he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Manchurian Army, and then Commander-in-Chief of the Far Eastern Army, but was dismissed after the Battle of Mukden (present-day Shenyang). During World War I he served as military governor of Turkestan, where he suppressed rebellions in Central Asia. After the October Revolution, he refused the French ambassador's offer of asylum, and retreated to Dmitrov, Moscow Oblast, to dedicate himself to writing.
