This book is a set of 20 chapters in 2 volumes, written by the scholar Yan Zhitui during the Northern and Southern Dynasties of China, as a warning to his descendants. Yan Zhitui served four dynasties, Liang, Northern Qi, Northern Zhou, and Sui, but this book is believed to have been written in his later years during the Sui dynasty. It is mainly written from a Confucian perspective, and describes how to establish oneself, govern one's household, and live in the world, but there are also some parts that introduce Buddhist elements, such as the "Returning to the Heart" chapter, and some parts that examine characters and allusions. For this reason, it has been treated as a miscellaneous book since the "Siku Quanshu Zongmu Tiyao" of the Qing dynasty. There are also some sections that develop literary theory, such as the "Wenshu" chapter. In short, it is a critical book about the culture and civilization of the early 7th century, and in that sense it is noteworthy.
