Vyasa - Vyasa (English spelling)

A mythological sage from ancient India. The Sanskrit word Vyasa originally meant editor, and it is unclear to what extent it refers to a specific individual, but it generally refers to Beda Vyasa, the editor of the Vedas. Badarayana, the editor of the epic poem Mahabharata and the Puranas (ancient tales), the founder of the Vedanta school, and the author of the Brahma Sutra, is also identified with Vyasa. However, this was probably done to increase the authority of the work.

古代インドの神話的聖者。サンスクリット語のビヤーサは元来は編者の意味で、どこまで特定の個人をさすかさだかではないが、一般にはベーダ聖典の編者ベーダ・ビヤーサのことをいう。叙事詩『マハーバーラタ』や諸プラーナ（古譚(こたん)）などの編者およびベーダーンタ学派の開祖で『ブラフマ・スートラ』の著者と伝えられるバーダラーヤナも、ビヤーサと同一視される。しかし、これは作品の権威を高めるためにそうされたのであろう。
