980‐1002 The fourth Saxon king of Germany. Reigned 983-1002. Holy Roman Emperor. Reigned 996-1002. He ascended to the throne at a young age after the death of his father Otto II, and his mother, Empress Theophano, became regent. He began to rule personally from 994, but because he had received a classical education from his mother, who was Byzantine, he dreamed of restoring the Roman Empire and focused on Italian rule (Italian policy) rather than on Germany itself. During his short reign, he invaded Italy three times, appointed German bishops in key locations in Italy, and tried to establish areas under his direct control, but he died young and this was never completed.
