Chugoku Mountains

Japanese:
Chugoku Mountains

A mountain range stretching from northwestern Hyogo Prefecture to Yamaguchi Prefecture, sometimes referring to just the Sekiryo Mountains, and sometimes including the surrounding Kibi Plateau and Iwami Plateau. The Sekiryo Mountains are 1,000-1,300 meters above sea level, and generally gentle, with the highest point being Mt. Hyonosen at 1,510 meters. At the mountaintops there is a high flat surface called Noro. It forms the watershed between San'in and San'yo, but only the Gonokawa River system crosses the Chugoku Mountains and flows into the Sea of Japan. The area west of the part where the Gonokawa River crosses is called the Kanmuriyama Mountains, and the area east is called the East Chugoku Mountains. The mountainous backbone is biased towards the north, and the Sendai, Tenjin, Hino, and Kobe rivers that flow towards the Sea of Japan run along steep slopes, and in many places the mountains approach the Sea of Japan. The Yoshii, Asahi, and Ota rivers that flow down to the Seto Inland Sea form wide alluvial plains in their downstream.

The Kibi Plateau and Iwami Plateau are elevated peneplains at an elevation of 400 to 500 meters, with many intermountain basins. In the Chugoku Mountains, iron smelting has been practiced since ancient times, using iron sand from weathered granite, and many of the villages in the mountains are associated with this method. In addition, Wagyu cattle breeding is popular on the flat areas, and rice paddy cultivation is progressing well despite the mountainous area.
