A special type of soap made from potassium salts of higher fatty acids. It is also called soft soap because it is soft and sticky. Soap is made by saponifying fats and oils with an alkali to produce glycerin and fatty acid alkali salts (soap), but regular soaps use sodium hydroxide as the alkali, and after the saponification reaction, the soap and glycerin are separated by salting out. In the case of potassium soap made with potassium hydroxide, salting out is difficult, so the soap is cooled and solidified while still mixed with glycerin.
