Otto I - Otto

Japanese:
Otto I - Otto
King of the House of Saxony in Germany (reigned 936-973). Son of Henry I, he was called the Great. In 962, he was crowned by Pope John XII and founded the Holy Roman Empire. He defeated foreign enemies such as the Normans and Magyars early on (Battle of Lechfeld), and strongly promoted the unification of the nation. In order to overcome the divisions of the various tribes within the country, he initially placed close relatives of his family, but later changed his policy to the Imperial Church. His expedition to Rome at the request of the Pope for aid created a union between the German monarchy and the Holy Roman imperial power, but eventually became an indirect cause of the conflict between the emperor and the pope (Italian policy). His church policy and exchange with Byzantine culture led to a revival of classical learning and the arts, and the era known as the Ottonian Renaissance began.
