Born: July 6, 1755, York
[Died] December 7, 1826, London British sculptor. One of the leading figures in British neoclassical sculpture. From 1775 he worked on making prototypes at J. Wedgwood's pottery factory. From 1787 to 1794 he studied in Rome, during which time he was taught by art historian J. Winckelmann. He produced numerous portrait sculptures in a classical style and with a high level of spirituality. He became a member of the Royal Academy from 1800 onwards, and in 1810 became its first professor of sculpture. He was also an accomplished illustrator, illustrating works such as Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and Dante's Divine Comedy. His major works include Nelson's Tomb and Statue of Reynolds.
