Gießen - Gießen (English spelling)

A city in the state of Hesse, Germany. It is located on the terraces and hills on the left bank of the Lahn River. It has a population of 73,100 (2000). A settlement was formed around a moated castle built in 1150, and it obtained city rights in 1248. It was fortified in the 16th century, and many of the existing buildings, such as the castle and armory, were built there. In the 19th century, it became important as a railway hub, and rapidly developed as a regional center in central Hesse. The university, founded in 1607, has facilities throughout the city, including a museum that preserves the laboratory of the famous agricultural chemist Justus Liebig, and the grave of Roentgen, the discoverer of X-rays. In addition to traditional tobacco processing and machine tool manufacturing, the city is home to industries such as casting, precision instruments, optics, and electronics.
