Japanese: ワスレガイ(忘貝) - ワスレガイ（英語表記）broad hinged venus

A bivalve mollusca of the Veneridae family (illustration). The shell is thick and solid, nearly circular, and only weakly bulged. It is 7 cm long, 6 cm high, and 2.5 cm bulged. The surface is smooth and shiny. It usually has purple-brown radial color bands and a fine mesh pattern, but there is considerable variation among individuals, including those that are entirely white. The apex of the shell is deeply concave, with a ligament at the base. The inner surface is purple-white, with fine serrations on the edge. It is widely distributed from the Boso Peninsula south to the tropical Pacific Ocean, and lives on shallow sandy bottoms. It feeds on plankton and organic matter.

マルスダレガイ科の二枚貝（イラスト）。殻は厚くて堅固，円形に近く膨らみは弱い。長さ7cm，高さ6cm，膨らみ2.5cmに達する。表面は滑らかで光沢がある。通常紫褐色の放射状の色帯や細かい網目状の模様があるが，全体が白色のものまで個体変異が著しい。殻頂は深くくぼみ，その底に靱帯がある。内面は紫白色で，縁部には細かなぎざぎざがある。房総半島以南～熱帯太平洋に広く分布し，浅海の砂底にすむ。プランクトンや有機物を食べる。
