An island with an area of approximately 0.69 km2 , located in the Genkai Sea, 75 km north-northwest of Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It belongs to Oshima Village, Munakata County (now Munakata City), and is home to the Okitsumiya Shrine of Munakata Taisha Shrine and is also famous for the Okinoshima ruins. It is made of basalt and covered in a primeval forest of subtropical trees (a natural monument). People related to the lighthouse and shrine live there, and fishermen move here from Oshima during the autumn and winter fishing seasons. There is a large fishing port that serves as a refuge. 福岡県福岡市北北西75kmの玄界灘に浮かぶ面積約0.69km2の島。宗像(むなかた)郡大島村(現・宗像市)に属し,宗像大社の沖津宮があり,沖ノ島遺跡でも有名。玄武岩からなり,亜熱帯樹の原始林(天然記念物)におおわれる。灯台と神社関係者が常住し,秋冬の漁期には大島から漁民が移住。大規模な避難漁港がある。
