Japanese: 色葉字類抄∥伊呂波字類抄 - いろはじるいしょう

A dictionary written by Tachibana Tadakane at the end of the Heian period. It is one of the most noteworthy of Japan's old dictionaries. Whereas previous dictionaries had been formatted so that users would look up kanji characters and then find how to read them, this one looks up words and then finds the kanji that go with them. The arrangement of words in Iroha order became the basis for the organization of dictionaries for the following hundreds of years. There are two, three, and ten volumes. The two-volume version is thought to be a manuscript of the three-volume version. The ten-volume version was extensively expanded in the Kamakura period and is extremely rich in content, but for that reason the three-volume version and the ten-volume version each have their own unique value.

辞書。著者は橘忠兼。平安時代の末期に作られた。日本の古辞書のうちで，最も注意すべきものの一つ。これまでの辞書が漢字を引いて，そのよみかたを求める体裁のものであったのに対し，ことばからこれにあてる漢字を求めるようになっている。ことばの配列をいろは順にしたことは，その後数百年にわたる辞書の組織のもととなった。2巻本と3巻本と10巻本がある。2巻本は3巻本の稿本とみられる。10巻本は，鎌倉時代になってから大増補されたもので，内容ははなはだ豊富であるが，それだけに，3巻本と10巻本とは，それぞれに，別個の独自の価値をもつ。
