...Located at the southern tip of Amakusa Shimoshima in Kumamoto Prefecture, this is the prefecture's leading fishing town with a good port on the ria coast. In 1954, Ushibuka Town was incorporated into a city by the merger of the four villages of Fukami, Oniki, Kudama, and Futaura. Population: 20,097 (1995). The Jomon and Yayoi ruins in Amatsuke show that people lived there from early on. One of the five Amakusa leaders of the Middle Ages, the Kudama clan, built Kudama Castle (a sea castle), and with the rise of trade with southern Europeans and the shipping industry, Ushibuka Port flourished as a stopover port on the way to Nagasaki, Satsuma, and Ryukyu.
