Abolitionist Movement - Abolitionist Movement
The modern movement to abolish slavery began from the standpoint of the Enlightenment and humanitarianism. In the UK, thanks to the efforts of Wilberforce and others from the mid-18th century onwards, the slave trade was banned in 1807, and all slaves were freed in 1838. In France, a bill to abolish slavery was enacted in 1794 during the revolution, but it was temporarily revived during the Napoleonic era. However, the slave trade declined after the independence of Haiti, the first black republic, under Toussaint Louverture and his successors, and was completely abolished by the February Revolution of 1848. In the US, slavery was abolished in the northern states soon after independence, and the slave trade was abolished nationwide in 1808, but the southern states wanted to continue slavery (Missouri Compromise), and the Republican Party was formed in opposition to this. In the end, slavery continued in the South until the constitution was amended after the Civil War (1865).
