Complement is a substance found in the normal serum of vertebrates that acts as a bactericidal agent. It was originally called alexin (a defense factor), but as its role in the immune response became clear, it came to be called complement, since it complements the action of antibodies.

Even if antibodies react and bind to bacteria or viruses that have invaded the body, this alone does not neutralize the bacteria or viruses.
