[Born] 1629 (Meisho 6). Higo [Died] Tenwa 2 (1682) A monk of the Obaku sect in the early Edo period. His given name was Dokou and his posthumous title was Hozo Kokushi. He became a monk at the age of 13 and went to Kyoto. In 1655 he met Ingen and studied under his disciple Mokuan. With the goal of compiling and publishing the Tripitaka, he raised funds and made Hozoin Temple on Mount Obaku a repository for the scriptures. He set up a printing company in Kyoto and published the book in 1878 after more than a dozen years. This is known as the "Tetsugenban" or "Obakuban Daizokyo." He was also active in society, taking part in relief efforts during the famine of 1882.
