Sea Road - Kaijo no Michi

Japanese:
Sea Road - Kaijo no Michi

This theory states that the Japanese came from the south on the tidal currents, and was put forward in a book of the same name by Yanagita Kunio. Cowry shells are distributed in areas where the Kuroshio Current reaches, with Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures on the Pacific coast and Toyama prefecture on the Sea of Japan side as the northern limit. Copper coins became common during the time of the First Emperor of Qin in China, but before that cowry shells were the most valuable commodity. The theory goes that people must have traveled in search of cowry shells, using small boats to navigate around islands and shorelines, assisted by strong winds blowing inland. The core of Yanagita Kunio's theory is that they brought rice seeds from the continent with them. Although archaeological verification is insufficient, this theory is considered one way of predicting the route of the Japanese people's arrival when explaining the southern elements of Japanese culture.
