Yokogawa

Japanese: 横川 - よこがわ
Yokogawa
This is the former town area in the northwest of Kirishima City, in the northeastern part of Kagoshima Prefecture. It is located at the western foot of Mount Kirishima, on the Shirasu Plateau. It was incorporated as a town in 1940. In 2005, it merged with one city and five towns, Kokubu City, Mizobe Town, Makizono Town, Kirishima Town, Hayato Town, and Fukuyama Town, to form Kirishima City. The main industry is agriculture, with rice, sweet potatoes, tobacco, and other crops grown, and cattle breeding is also thriving. Chestnuts, shiitake mushrooms, timber, and bamboo are also produced. The Yamagano Gold Mine was mined for over 300 years, but closed in 1953. It is located near the Yokokawa Interchange on the Kyushu Expressway and Kagoshima Airport, and is attracting businesses.

Yokokawa

A village in the southwest of Annaka City, western Gunma Prefecture. The site of the Usui Barrier on the Nakasendo Road, the remains of which still remain today. Yokokawa Station on the JR Shinetsu Main Line was known as a locomotive switching station for the Abt system track that crossed the Usui Pass (the Abt system was abolished in 1963), but with the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen in 1997, the Yokokawa-Karuizawa section was abandoned. The pass's kamameshi (rice cooked in a pot) remains a local specialty. The area is the junction of National Route 18 and the Usui Bypass, and Oneyama Forest Park is nearby.
