Vidyāpati (English spelling)

Japanese: ビディヤーパティ（英語表記）Vidyāpati

A poet from the Mithila region of northeastern India in the 14th and 15th centuries. According to the fragmentary descriptions in his own writings, he was born in 1380 to a Brahmin family, and from an early age he followed his father to serve in the court of King Ganeshwar, where he died in 1424, but many details are unclear. Vidyapati's works strongly reflect the historical background of a period of cultural change, as they cover both the faith of Siva and the faith of Vishnu, and include writings in both the classical language of Sanskrit and the ancient modern language of Awahat.

14～15世紀，北東インドのミティラー地方の詩人。自作の断片的な叙述によると，1380年にバラモンの家に生まれ，幼いころから父に従ってガネーシュワル王の宮廷に出仕，1424年に没したとされるが，定かでない部分が多い。ビディヤーパティの作品には，シバ信仰とビシュヌ信仰の両方にわたること，古典語たるサンスクリットと近代語の古層のアワハットの両方による著作があることなど，文化的な変動期の時代背景が色濃く反映している。
