Asakawa [town] - Asakawa
A town in Ishikawa County in southern Fukushima Prefecture. Most of the town is the hilly land of the Abukuma Highlands, where rice and tobacco are cultivated. Asakawa, in the center of the town, was the castle town of the Asakawa clan in the early modern period, and later a jin'ya (camp) for the Tenryo government was established here. The town is known for the Asakawa Uprising (1798), a peasant uprising. The Suigun Line runs through the town. The town sustained damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 37.43 km2 . 6,888 people (2010).
