A river that flows southeast through the Balkan Peninsula. In Greek it is called the Néstos River. It originates in the Rila Mountains in the Rhodope Mountains in southwestern Bulgaria, runs south parallel to the Struma River between the Pirin and Rhodope Mountains, and then flows south through northeastern Greece into the Aegean Sea. Its total length is 273 km. The Mesta River basin on the southern slopes of the Rhodope Mountains is bathed in warm sunlight, which allows grapes with a high sugar content to grow, and the area is famous for producing Melnik, a specialty red-dark wine with a viscous, full-bodied flavor.
