American composer and arranger. Born in New York. After ten years as a violinist with the Los Angeles Symphony, he became an arranger for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra around 1919, and made a name for himself with his orchestration of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" in 1924. Among his own compositions, "Grand Canyon" (1931) is particularly famous, but he also left behind descriptive orchestral works with American themes.
