Yagyu Jubei - Yagyu Jubei

Japanese: 柳生十兵衛 - やぎゅうじゅうべえ

A swordsman in the early Edo period. The eldest son of Yagyu Munenori. His name was also Mitsuyoshi or Jubei. He entered the service of Tokugawa Iemitsu as a page in 1619, but retired in 1626 after incurring Iemitsu's wrath. He seems to have studied the Shinkage-ryu school of swordsmanship and taught disciples at a dojo in Yagyu, Yamato. He was the teacher of Araki Mataemon. He returned to the service in 1638. The style that followed Jubei is usually called the Yagyu style.

江戸初期の剣客。柳生宗矩の長男。名は三厳(みつよし)，重兵衛とも。1619年徳川家光に小姓として出仕，1626年家光の勘気にふれ致仕し，大和(やまと)柳生の道場で家法新陰流の研究と門弟の指導にあたったようである。荒木又右衛門の師。1638年には再出仕している。ふつうこの十兵衛以後の流儀を柳生流と呼ぶ。
