Shinsuke Ogawa

Japanese: 小川紳介 - おがわしんすけ

Film director. Born on June 25, 1935 in Kamado Village, Gifu Prefecture (now Kamado, Mizunami City). Dropped out of the Faculty of Literature at Kokugakuin University in 1957 (Showa 32). Worked as an assistant director at Iwanami Productions from 1960, went freelance in 1964 and made the documentary Sea of Youth: Four Correspondence Course Students (1966). Founded Ogawa Productions in 1968 and made seven feature films about the farmers' movement against the construction of Narita Airport, living in their villages and fighting alongside them. These works range from Japan Liberation Front: Summer at Sanrizuka (1968) to Sanrizuka: May Sky, Village's Wandering Road (1977). After this, he lived in Makinomura, Kaminoyama, Yamagata Prefecture, and made "Nipponkoku: Furuyashikimura" (1982) and "1000-Year-Old Sundial: Makinomura Monogatari" (1987). His method of filming themes that explore what it means to be a farmer and what it means to be a rural village while living with the villagers became known internationally as one of the ultimate ways of making documentaries, and he particularly influenced Asian filmmakers. He passed away on February 7, 1992.

映画監督。昭和10年6月25日、岐阜県釜戸(かまど)村（現、瑞浪(みずなみ)市釜戸）に生まれる。1957年（昭和32）、国学院大学文学部中退。1960年から岩波映画製作所で助監督として働き、1964年にフリーとなってドキュメンタリーの『青年の海　四人の通信教育生たち』（1966）をつくる。1968年に小川プロダクションを設立し、成田空港の建設に反対する農民たちの運動を、彼らの村に住み込んで農民たちといっしょに闘争しながら長篇7本にまとめる。『日本解放戦線　三里塚の夏』（1968）から『三里塚　五月の空・里のかよい路』（1977）に至る作品である。このあと山形県上山(かみのやま)市牧野村に住み込んで『ニッポン国　古屋敷村』（1982）と『1000年刻みの日時計　牧野村物語』（1987）をつくる。農民とはなにか、農村とはなにかというテーマを、村で村人たちといっしょに暮らしながら撮るという彼の方法は、ドキュメンタリーの作り方の一つの究極として国際的にも知られ、とくにアジアの映画作家たちに影響を与えた。平成4年2月7日没。
