1877‐1947 British theater critic. From 1923 until his death, he published weekly theater reviews in the Sunday Times of London, writing frank and witty evaluations. He had little appreciation for actors after H. Irving, and often expressed his own strong preferences, which caused some readers to resent him. He had no interest in politics or social issues, and his diary entries about reading, theater, celebrities, etc. from 1932 onwards were published under the title Ego, vol.
