British theater critic. From 1923 until his death, he published weekly theater reviews in the Sunday Times of London, writing frank and witty evaluations. He had little appreciation for actors after H. Irving, and often expressed his own strong preferences, which caused some readers to resent him. He had no interest in politics or social issues, and his diary entries about reading, theater, celebrities, etc. from 1932 onwards were published under the title Ego, vol. 9 (1935-49). イギリスの劇評家。1923年から死の年までロンドンの《サンデー･タイムズ》に毎週劇評を発表，率直な評価を機知に富んだ文体で綴った。H.アービング後の俳優をほとんど評価せず，しばしば独自の好みを強く出したので，一部読者の反発をかった。政治や社会問題には関心がなく，読書，演劇，名士などについての32年以降の日記は《エゴ》9巻(1935‐49)と題して出版された。【喜志哲雄】
