Monarchianism

A Christian heresy about the Trinity from the late 2nd century to the 3rd century. It denied the divinity of the person (→ persona) of Jesus the Son, and acknowledged divinity only in the person of God the Father. There are two types: (1) Principia: Christ was just a man who became the Son of God because he was filled with divine power. The proponents were Theodotus the Elder and Paul of Samosata. (2) Modalism: "Father" and "Son" are merely different names for the same God, and "Father" himself became Christ and suffered. It was preached by Praxeas and refuted by Tertullian, but was later supported by the disciples of Noetus of Smyrna.

2世紀末～3世紀における，三位一体に関するキリスト教の異端説。子なるイエスの位格 (→ペルソナ ) の神性を否定し，父なる神の位格にのみ神性を認めた。次の2種がある。 (1) 力本説的　キリストはただの人で，神の力に満たされたがゆえに神の子になったとする。大テオドトゥス，サモサタのパウルスが主唱者。 (2) 様態論的　「父」と「子」とは，同一の神の別称にすぎず，「父」自身がキリストとなって受難したとする。プラクセアスが説き，テルトゥリアヌスがこれを反駁したが，のちにスミルナのノエトゥスの弟子たちによって支持された。
