Asagara - Asagara

Japanese: アサガラ - あさがら

A deciduous tall tree of the Styrax family that grows in sunny valleys. Its wood is soft and breaks easily, so it is likened to the barkless stalk of hemp, or hemp husk. It reaches a height of 15m. The leaves are alternate, broadly elliptical, sharply pointed at the tip, 6-14cm long, with low glandular sawtooth edges, and somewhat thick. In May and June, panicles with 2-3 leaves hang down from the lateral buds of the previous year's branches. The flowers are white, about 1cm long, and have a pentagonal calyx tube with five lobes and 10 stamens at the end.

日当りの良い谷間に生えるエゴノキ科の落葉高木で，材は柔らかく折れやすいので，皮をとったアサの茎，すなわち麻殻にたとえられる。高さ15mに達する。葉は互生し，広楕円形で先端が急にとがり，長さ6～14cm，縁に先が腺となる低い鋸歯があり，質はやや厚い。5～6月ごろ，前年枝の側芽から2～3枚の葉をつけた円錐花序を下垂する。花は白く，長さ約1cm，横断面が五角形の萼筒の先に，5裂した花冠と10本のおしべがある。
