A medieval samurai family in Kazusa. Also written as Chonan clan. In the Kamakura period, the Chonan clan was a branch of the Kazusa clan of the Kanmu Taira clan, but details are unknown. The Chonan clan, whose donor is recorded as "Kazusa Chubu Daifu Venerable Michitoshi Chonan Jiro Taira Tsunehide" on the ink inscription on the seated statue of Ryogen dated 1490 (Entoku 2) at Chofukujuji Temple (Sanzunodai, Chonan District, currently Chonan Town, Chosei District, Chiba Prefecture), is likely a descendant of the Chonan clan. In addition to the Chonan clan of Taira surname, the Chonan clan originated from the Takeda clan of Kai during the Muromachi and Sengoku periods. Namely, Nobunaga, the second son of Takeda Nobumitsu of the Kai Genji clan, built both Chonan and Mariyatsu castles in 1456 (Kōshō 2), and made Chonan Castle (currently Chonan, Chonan Town, Chosei District) his own castle and Mariyatsu Castle (currently Mariyatsu, Kisarazu City) his son Nobutaka's castle.
