Both interstellar gas and dust are concentrated in the galactic plane, and are more prevalent along the arms of the galaxy. Even when looking at galaxies other than our own, galaxies seen edge-on have a dark absorption band on their galactic plane, and galaxies facing in a direction that allows us to see the arms of the galaxy have dark absorption bands (called dust lanes) along the arms. In other words, this is a general property that is found not only in our galaxy, but in all galaxies, and there is a strong correlation with the distribution of O-type and B-type stars in the galaxy. …
