Yueyang Tower

Japanese: 岳陽楼 - がくようろう

Located in the northeast of Hunan Province, China, at the northeast end of Dongting Lake, the country's second largest freshwater lake, this tower is one of the three great towers in Jiangnan. It is located in Yueyang City in the province. Built in 215 as a parade tower for sailors' training, this 21m-tall, three-story wooden building has long been praised for its magnificent view of Dongting Lake, and is known as a place where literati such as Du Fu, Li Bai, Bai Juyi, Meng Haoran, and Fan Zhong'an visited and composed poems. Du Fu's poem "Climbing Yueyang Tower" is famous. Fan Zhongyan's "Records of Yueyang Tower" from the Northern Song Dynasty is also famous for the line "Before the sorrows of the world, we must be sad, and after the joys of the world, we must be happy."

中国の湖南省北東部、同国第2の淡水湖・洞庭湖（ドンティンフー）の東北端にある、江南の三大名楼の一つに数えられる楼閣。同省の岳陽（ユエヤン）市にある。215年に、水兵の訓練の閲兵楼として建てられた高さ21mの3階建ての木造建築で、古くからここで眺める洞庭湖は絶景と賞賛され、杜甫や李白、白居易（白楽天）、孟浩然、范仲庵などの文人が訪れ、詩を詠んだところとして知られる。杜甫の詩「登岳陽楼（岳陽楼に登る）」は有名である。また、北宋の時代の范仲淹の「岳陽楼記」は、「先天下之憂而憂後天下之楽而楽（天下の憂に先んじて憂い、天下の楽に後れて楽しむ）」の一節で有名である。
