Iron ore is located in Changryeol-dong, north of the town, and is said to have a reserve of 1.1 billion tons. It was discovered in 1916 and mining began in 1935. The deposit reaches a depth of 3,000 meters and consists of hematite, magnetite, and quartz schist, with magnetite having a high specific gravity. The grade is 40%, and is increased to 60% by magnetic separation. The iron ore is sent to the Chongjin Steelworks by the Musan Line and some by a transport pipe.
