A volcano located southeast of Mount Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture. The highest point is Mount Echizen, 1,504 meters above sea level. From Mount Echizen to Mount Yobiko (1,310 meters), Mount Ihai (1,458 meters), and Mount Aitaka (1,188 meters in the strict sense), the mountain is characterized by its sawtooth-shaped eroded ridge when viewed from afar. It is a stratovolcano formed at roughly the same time as the Hakone volcano, and the source of the Suzu River on the west side of Mount Ihai is said to be the former crater. The northern slope of Mount Echizen borders Mount Fuji and forms the Jurigi Plateau. The southeastern foot of the mountain has gentle slopes and has been converted into a golf course. The mountain was once called Ashitaka no Mine, and in ancient times an official ranch was established there for horse grazing. The slopes at the base of the mountain are covered with tea plantations, tree orchards, and farmland, and the Negata Kaido, a former Tokaido road, runs through the foot of the mountain on the border with Ukishimahara.
