1889‐1970 A lawyer and a leading figure in the pre-war Arab Palestinian liberation movement. Born into a prominent family in Nablus, he founded a secret political society called "Young People" in Paris in 1911 with seven other members. It differs from the society of the same name that was founded in Beirut in 1875 in that all members were Muslims. During the two world wars, he had close ties with the King of Jordan and Amin al-Husseini, and after going into exile he held a key position in the Arab League, but was unable to become head of the PLO.
