(1) A university founded in March 1640 in Turku, Finland. It is the predecessor of the current University of Helsinki. It began with four faculties: theology, law, medicine, and philosophy, 11 professors, and approximately 200 students. Portan, who became known as the father of Finnish historiography for his historical research based on documents, was a professor of rhetoric from 1777 to 1804. This university was the center of the Romantic movement in the early 1800s. In September 1627, a major fire broke out in Turku, destroying the university.
