Year of death: December 14, 1886 (Meiji 19) Year of birth: October 15, 1845 (November 14, 1845) An engineer from the Meiji period. Manager of a government-run Western-style woolen textile factory. The second son of village headman Hakunose Hyoe and Sato of Utsui Village, Asa County, Nagato Province (Yamaguchi Prefecture), he was wealthy, but was adopted by Inoue Han'emon and participated in the overthrow of the shogunate as the commander of the Kiheitai. After the Meiji Restoration, he accompanied Kido Takayoshi to Tokyo, and from February 1871 (Meiji 4) he studied in Berlin, where he decided to switch from military science to industry. He studied woolen weaving techniques from 1872 to 1873, and returned to Japan in January 1876 to join the Ministry of Home Affairs' Industrial Promotion Bureau, and in September 1889 he became the first manager of Senju Carpet Factory. He joined the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce in 1881 and the Army in 1896, but left behind a memoir that shows the origins of industrial development, saying, "I will prevent imports as a model not only for the Army but also for the Japanese woolen textile industry." <References> Inoue Shozo Memorial Committee eds., "The Life of Inoue Shozo," "A Brief History of Senju Carpet Works over 50 Years," Kobayashi Masaaki, "The Issue of the Sale of Senju Carpet Works" (Historical Research on Corporate Activities) (Masaaki Kobayashi) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
