Mean free path

Also known as the mean free path. The average distance traveled by particles that collide with each other and move in a zigzag pattern, such as gas molecules and free electrons in metals, from one collision to the next. For gas molecules under standard conditions, the mean free path is about 10(-/) 5 cm. It is an important quantity in the kinetic theory of gases, and the viscosity, thermal conductivity, diffusion coefficient, etc. of gases are related to the mean free path. 平均自由行程とも。気体分子，金属内の自由電子のように，相互に衝突しながらジグザグ運動する粒子が１回衝突してから次に衝突するまでに進む距離の平均値。標準状態の気体分子では10(-/)5cm程度である。気体分子運動論で重要な量で，気体の粘性率，熱伝導率，拡散係数等は平均自由行路に関係。
