1095‐1154 King of Sicily. Son of Count Roger I of Sicily. Became Count of Sicily in 1113. Attacked North Africa (today's coast of Tunisia) but failed. Expanded his power into southern Italy, and became Duke of Apulia in 1128, despite conflicts with the Pope, the Duke of Capua, and other princes. With the support of antipope Anacletus II, he obtained the title of King of Sicily and was crowned in Palermo (1130). Pope Innocent II united forces that did not want a powerful state to be established in southern Italy, including Holy Roman Emperor Lothair III, Byzantine Emperor John II, Pisa, and Genoa, to oppose Roger.
