Okiyo no Fuminushi
Year of death: Kasho 3.11.6 (850.12.12)
Year of birth: 9th year of the Houki Era (778)
An official in the early Heian period. Son of Yoshida Furumaro. A member of a clan of immigrants from Baekje, both his grandfather and father were court physicians, but the author was favored by Emperor Saga from an early age and served as Captain Saemon and General of the Left Guard. He was well versed in Confucianism, but also excelled in swimming and martial arts, which is likely why he was selected for military service. He was also known as a master of the Japanese harp, and received secret instruction in the art from the Silla native Sara Makuma. He also gained fame as the governor of Izumi and Bizen. In 837, he was given the surname Okiyo Ason. In 850, he became Jibu-daifu, but retired to the mountains to devote himself to Buddhism, leading a sensitive life.
