A general term (illustration) for protozoa belonging to the family Peridinidae of the order Dinoflagellates, or more broadly, the dinoflagellates. They live in plankton in the sea, ponds, and lakes. Their bodies are covered with two or more cellulose shell plates, which can be circular, spindle-shaped, conical, or anchor-shaped. A pit-like pattern can be seen on the surface of the shell plates. The shell plates also have a horizontal groove surrounding the body and a short vertical groove, with one wavy horizontal flagellum passing through the horizontal groove and the vertical flagellum hanging backwards. Marine species are bioluminescent, and sometimes occur abnormally, causing red tides. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
