?‐1101 Count of Sicily. Youngest son of Tancredi, a Norman knight of the House of Hauteville. Together with his brother Robert Guiscard, he conquered Calabria and Sicily, demonstrating his military talent. As Count of Sicily, he governed the island under his brother's guardianship, and further consolidated his power after his brother's death (1085). He introduced Christianity to Sicily, which had been under Muslim rule, and placed bishops of his own choosing in various places. As for administration, he inherited the system from the Islamic era.
