Tokyo Bay Trans-Road

A toll highway connecting Kawasaki City and Kisarazu City in Chiba Prefecture. It was completed in 1997 and opened under the name Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. It is 15 kilometers long and has four lanes in all sections. It crosses the center of Tokyo Bay via bridges, tunnels, and an artificial island, and a parking area (Umihotaru) is located on the artificial island. The purpose of this road is to contribute to the development of the Boso region, which was separated by Tokyo Bay, and to the alleviation of traffic congestion in central Tokyo. It is also expected to form a trunk road network in the metropolitan area together with the Tokyo Outer Ring Expressway and the Metropolitan Intercity Expressway, strengthening ties between cities and greatly contributing to the development of the metropolitan area. The business approach of this road is characterized by the division of roles between the Trans-Tokyo Bay Highway Company, which was established with investment from private companies and others based on the Special Measures Law Concerning the Construction of the Trans-Tokyo Bay Highway in 1986, and the Japan Highway Public Corporation, in order to utilize private funds, management capabilities, and technical capabilities. After the Japan Highway Public Corporation was privatized in 2005, the road has been managed by the Trans-Tokyo Bay Highway Company and the East Nippon Expressway Company.

川崎市と千葉県木更津(きさらづ)市を連絡する有料の自動車専用道路。1997年（平成9）に完成、東京湾アクアラインの名称で開通している。延長15キロメートル、全区間4車線。橋梁(きょうりょう)、トンネルおよび人工島により東京湾の中央を横断しており、人工島にはパーキングエリア（海ほたる）が設置されている。この道路は、東京湾で隔てられていた房総地域の振興発展および東京都心の渋滞緩和に寄与することを目的とする。また、東京外環自動車道、首都圏中央連絡自動車道等と一体となって首都圏における幹線道路網を形成し、各都市相互の連携を強化し、首都圏の発展に大きく役だつものと期待されている。この道路の事業手法は、民間の資金、経営能力および技術的能力を活用するため、1986年（昭和61）に制定された東京湾横断道路の建設に関する特別措置法に基づき、民間企業等の出資により設立された東京湾横断道路株式会社と日本道路公団が役割分担して建設および管理を行ってきたところに特徴がある。2005年の日本道路公団民営化後は、東京湾横断道路株式会社と東日本高速道路株式会社により管理されている。
