A national university corporation. It was established in 1949 (Showa 24) as a single-discipline national university with only a Faculty of Education, integrating Tokyo First, Second, and Third Normal Schools and Tokyo Youth Normal School. As of 2010 (Heisei 22), the Faculty of Education has teacher training courses (primary education, secondary education, special needs education, special education), human and social sciences, international understanding education, environmental science, information education, and arts, sports, and culture courses, and the Graduate School of Education (master's course) has been established. In 1996 (Heisei 8), the Graduate School of School Education was established. This is a graduate school with a doctoral course of only three years, established by a joint venture of Tokyo Gakugei University, Saitama University, Chiba University, and Yokohama National University, and is organized based on the Faculty of Education (Yokohama National University's Faculty of Education and Human Sciences) and Graduate School of Education (master's course) of each university, but is independent of each graduate school. The university has 11 affiliated schools, as well as facilities for educational research, such as the Environmental Education Practice Center, the Educational Practice Research Support Center, and the International Education Center. In April 2004, the university became a national university corporation with the enforcement of the National University Corporation Law. The university is located at 4-1-1 Nukui Kitamachi, Koganei City, Tokyo.
