Latin Education - Latin Education
Latin was originally a local language of the ancient Latins, but came to be widely used under the political rule of the Romans. However, the study of the principles and teaching methods of the language began under the influence of advanced Greek culture, and the linguistic theory of the so-called Alexandrian school was used as a model. It was not until the 4th and 5th centuries, that is, after the period of so-called "Vulgar Latin," that Latin underwent its own theoretical analysis. The most representative figures were Donatus in the 4th century and Priscianus in the 5th and 6th centuries, and the latter's 18-volume Institutiones grammaticae (Instructions on Grammar) was used for a long time in later generations as a standard textbook on grammatical theory.
