Novelist and critic. Born in Okayama Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of English Literature at Waseda University. Encouraged by Tayama Katai during his time writing letters to Bunsho Sekai and other publications, he decided to pursue a career in literature. He contributed to the development of Shunjusha and took part in social movements such as Abe Isoo's founding of the Japan Fabian Society, Kagawa Toyohiko's construction of a farmers' school, and serving as the publishing director and education director of the Japan Labor-Farmer Party. He also made a great contribution to publishing culture in many ways, including being involved in the editing and planning of Kaizosha's Complete Works of Modern Japanese Literature and Shinchosha's Complete Works of World Literature. He wrote an extremely large number of unique works, including the novel "The Rabbit and the Gisaeng" (1923), critiques such as "Sixteen Lectures on Novel Research" (1925), "Bungei Tozai Nanboku" (1926), and "Meiji Literary Outlook" (1928), as well as research works such as "Japanese Sports Cultural History" (1956), "Study on the History of Japanese-American Literary Exchange" (1960), and "New Perspectives on Comparative Literature," as well as "Collection of Discussions in the Spring and Autumn of the Meiji Era." We also cannot forget his contributions to popular literature, his publications as president of the Meiji Culture Research Society, such as "Complete Works of Meiji Culture," "Complete Works of Newspapers in the Late Edo Period and Meiji Era," and his writing of the first volume of the "Manuscript of the Centennial History of Waseda University."
