A push cart for carrying infants. In Japan, it is called a baby carriage or a stroller (Japanese English), but in Europe, a perambulator (abbreviated as pram) is clearly distinguished from what we call a stroller in Japan, and the equivalent of a stroller is called a push chair or folder. In America, it is usually called a baby carriage. A baby carriage is a relatively large vehicle with a thin box-shaped part made of wood, fiberglass, or metal attached to the top, and sometimes the upper box-shaped part can be separated. It is mainly used for lying or sitting, and can be used from newborns. In contrast, a stroller is a lightweight chair-type vehicle, the seat of which can be removed from the body or folded up. Since it is used in a seated position, it is recommended to use it from around 3 to 4 months of age.

Other types include baby carriages, which can be used as baby carriages by removing the box-shaped top part, and tricycles, which can be used as baby carriages and then converted into tricycles. There are also types with mother and child facing each other. The first baby carriage is said to have been made by American Charles Barton in 1848, and was a wooden two-wheeled vehicle. Wooden baby carriages were imported to Japan around 1879 (Meiji 12), where they were improved to take on the form we know today.

乳幼児を乗せる手押しの車。わが国では乳母車といったり、ベビーカー（和製英語）といったりしているが、ヨーロッパでは、乳母車perambulator（pramと略す）と、わが国でいうベビーカーとははっきり分けられ、ベビーカーに相当するものはpush chairとかfolderとよばれる。またアメリカでは普通baby carriageといわれている。乳母車は、細い木、グラスファイバー、金属製などの箱形のものが車上に取り付けられた比較的大形のもので、ときには上部の箱形のものが分離できるようなものをさす。おもに寝かせたり、座らせたりして使い、新生児から使用できる。これに対してベビーカーは、軽便な椅子(いす)式の車で、車体から座席部分を取り外すことができたり、折り畳むことができる。腰掛けの姿勢で使われるため、生後3、4か月ごろから使用するのが望ましい。

　そのほか、乳母車兼用車という、乳母車として使用後、上部の箱形のものを取り除いてベビーカーとして使用できるものや、三輪車兼用車とよばれ、ベビーカーとして使用したあと、三輪車に利用できるものなどがある。また形式的には、母親と子供が向かい合った対面式のものもある。なお、乳母車は1848年、アメリカのチャールズ・バートンCharles Bartonが最初につくったといわれ、木製の二輪車だった。日本には1879年（明治12）ごろ、木製のものが輸入され、改良されて今日の形になった。
