A residential and tourist city on the Pacific coast of California, USA, facing the Santa Barbara Channel. Population 86,000 (1994). A fort and a mission were built by the Spanish in the 1780s, and with the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad (1887), it developed as a seaside resort, and further grew with the discovery of citrus fruits, livestock, and oil. The beautiful colonial-style streetscape with white walls and red roof tiles is protected by city ordinances, and the city is blessed with a mild climate, attracting many tourists throughout the year.
