A city in central Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1952. It occupies the southern part of the Kujukuri Plain, through which the Ichinomiya River runs. The city center developed as a market town in the early modern period and as a producer of Kazusa cotton. Natural gas was developed in the early Showa period, and after World War II, industrial complexes were built, with electrical equipment and chemical industries moving in, turning the city into an inland industrial city. The city is served by the Ken-O Expressway and the Sotobo Line. In the rural areas, rice is the main crop, and greenhouse gardening for vegetables and flowers is also practiced. It is home to Moharaji Temple, one of the 39 head temples of the Nichiren sect, and a habitat for the Himeharu cicada (a natural monument). The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 99.92 km2 .
