Also known as the surf clam. A heavy, large bivalve of the family Surficaidae (illustration) with an extremely thick shell. It can reach 9.5 cm in length, 7.5 cm in height, and 4.5 cm in bulge. When young, the shell is pale yellow-white in color, but as it grows it becomes dark brown, thick, and rough, and the apex of the shell peels off, exposing the shell. The inside is white, and the interlocking teeth below the apex are large and strong, with a large black-brown bandolier in the depression between the teeth that opens the shell. They are collected with a rafter net from winter to spring. The spawning season is June to August, and the shell length reaches 7.2 cm after 5 years, 8.3 cm after 10 years, and around 9.4 cm after 20 years, with some individuals living for as long as 30 years.
