When the heart contracts, blood is pumped into the aorta and pulmonary artery, while blood from the vena cava and pulmonary veins flows from the right (left) atrium into the right (left) ventricle, causing the ventricles to expand. The mechanical vibrations that accompany this series of pulsations of the heart and great blood vessels can be sensed from outside the body. A mechanocardiogram is a graph that records the mechanical excitation process of the heart and great blood vessels. It is usually recorded at the same time as an electrocardiogram, which graphs the electrical excitation process of the heart. A mechanocardiogram consists of an apical cardiogram, which shows the pulsation of the apex of the heart (usually the left ventricular apex), a carotid artery wave, which shows the pulsation of the carotid artery, and a jugular venous wave, which shows the pulsation of the jugular vein, and is recorded in combination with a phonocardiogram.

心臓の収縮に伴い大動脈と肺動脈に血液が送り出され，一方，大静脈と肺静脈からの血液が右(左)心房から右(左)心室へと流入することにより心室の拡張が生ずる。これら一連の心臓および大血管の拍動に伴う機械的振動は体外から感知することができる。心機図とは，これら心臓および大血管の機械的興奮過程をグラフ上に記録したものである。通常，心臓の電気的興奮過程をグラフにした心電図と同時に記録する。心機図は，心臓の心尖部(通常は左室心尖部)の拍動を図示した心尖拍動図，頸動脈の拍動をグラフにした頸動脈波，頸静脈の拍動を図示した頸静脈波からなり，心音図と組み合わせて記録する。
